The Taste of Thanksgiving: Apple, Cranberry, and Tangerine Sauce

The Unsung Heroes of Thanksgiving: Celebrating Delicious Side Dishes and Homemade Apple-Cranberry-Tangerine Sauce

Beyond the Bird: Why Thanksgiving Sides Steal the Show

For many, Thanksgiving conjures images of a magnificent roasted turkey, golden brown and perfectly carved. And while I appreciate the tradition and the effort that goes into preparing the centerpiece of the feast, I must confess a little secret: my heart truly belongs to the side dishes. It’s the vibrant tapestry of flavors and textures that truly makes my Thanksgiving plate sing. From the savory, aromatic stuffing to the creamy, comforting potatoes, the medley of fresh vegetables, and the delightful assortment of casseroles and warm breads – these are the culinary stars that ignite my holiday spirit.

There’s an undeniable magic in the array of accompanying dishes that often outshines the main event. They tell stories of family traditions, passed-down recipes, and regional specialties. Each spoonful is a journey through memory and taste, a testament to the bounty of the season. No disrespect to our feathered friend, of course; the turkey plays its crucial role. But for me, the true excitement and anticipation of Thanksgiving dinner revolve entirely around those glorious, diverse, and often underrated side dishes. They are where the real culinary adventure begins, filling plates and hearts with unparalleled joy and satisfaction.

This year, the festive spirit is particularly vibrant as we gather with my husband’s cherished family at my sister-in-law’s beautiful home. Imagine: all twenty-six of us (and that’s not even counting a few beloved family members who couldn’t make it!) coming together under one roof. The air will be thick with the happy sounds of cousins playing games, sisters collaborating joyfully in the kitchen, our spouses playfully “bossed around” with holiday tasks, and great-grandparents watching over it all, their eyes twinkling with warmth and pride. It’s a scene of pure, unadulterated blessing, a testament to the power of family and togetherness.

My sister-in-law Maxine is truly blessed with ample, picturesque land, providing the perfect spacious and scenic backdrop for such a grand celebration. Her home transforms into a hub of laughter, shared stories, and the comforting aroma of Thanksgiving dishes simmering and baking. These are the moments we live for, the memories we etch into our hearts, reaffirming the deep bonds that tie us together. In the midst of all this joyful chaos, there’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the abundance of love, support, and connection that defines our family. It’s a vivid reminder of how fortunate we are to have such wonderful people in our lives, ready to celebrate and share in each other’s company.

Counting Our Blessings: A Year of Growth and Gratitude

As the holiday season draws near, I sincerely hope that each of you takes a quiet moment to reflect and count your blessings, whatever they may be. For me, they are truly abundant. I am blessed with an incredible immediate family and a vast, supportive extended family whom I can always lean on. My husband is not only my biggest encourager but also a loving partner who thoughtfully brings me coffee in bed every single morning – a small gesture that means the world. And my two happy, vibrant children are the very essence of who I am, shaping my world with their boundless energy and unconditional love.

This past year, like any other, has presented its fair share of challenges and necessary adjustments. While I constantly strive to take everything in stride (a goal I don’t always perfectly achieve, admittedly!), I’ve learned invaluable lessons about life and about myself. I am profoundly thankful for every single experience and insight that has come my way, recognizing each as an opportunity for growth. This year has also been a remarkable period for friendships. My life feels more complete and richer than ever before, thanks to a few truly special individuals who have graced my path, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Perhaps the biggest life lesson that truly resonated with me this year is the unwavering importance of always striving to be the best version of yourself, no matter the circumstances you find yourself in. Understand that you own your words, your actions, and your feelings. Embrace who you are with confidence, never allowing self-doubt to creep in, and most importantly, never be afraid to grow, to evolve, and to step outside your comfort zone. It’s in these moments of vulnerability and courage that we truly discover our strength and potential.

To everyone who takes the time to read my words here and offers encouragement along my journey, may God bless you abundantly. I genuinely love what I do, and I am ever so grateful for the wonderful opportunities this little blog has brought into my life this year. It has not only allowed me to share my passion but has also made my world feel wonderfully smaller, connecting me with incredible people and fostering a sense of community. And truly, that in itself is an extraordinary blessing.

Speaking of things I love, you might be wondering what delicious contributions I’m bringing to our grand Thanksgiving feast this year. Naturally, I’m thrilled to be sharing this absolutely scrumptious homemade Apple-Cranberry-Tangerine Sauce! It’s a vibrant, flavorful addition that perfectly balances the tartness of cranberries with the sweetness of apples and the bright zest of tangerine, creating a truly unforgettable holiday condiment.

But the cranberry sauce isn’t my only offering to the side dish spectacular. I’ll also be bringing a generous batch of these incredible Roasted Green Beans with Shallots and Almonds, their tender-crisp texture and nutty flavor always a hit. Alongside them, I’m preparing a colorful platter of beautifully Roasted Carrots, their natural sweetness caramelized to perfection. And, of course, no Thanksgiving in our family would be complete without my beloved Nonna’s Italian Stuffing, a treasured family tradition bursting with rich, savory flavors that transport everyone back to cherished childhood memories. Like I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again with passion: the sides are truly where the magic happens at our Thanksgiving table!

Apple-Cranberry-Tangerine Sauce
Recipe from Aggie’s Kitchen

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh squeezed tangerine juice (approximately 6-8 tangerines)
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (plus an additional 1/4 cup if desired, adjust to your preferred level of sweetness)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half for better flavor release
  • 2 (12-ounce) bags fresh unsweetened cranberries, thoroughly rinsed
  • Zest from 2 tangerines, finely grated
  • 2 Jonagold or Gala apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch

Instructions:

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the fresh tangerine juice, granulated sugar, and the broken cinnamon sticks. Bring this mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat slightly and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  2. Carefully add the rinsed cranberries, the finely grated tangerine zest, and the diced apples to the simmering juice mixture. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients.
  3. Increase the heat slightly to bring the mixture back to a slow boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer once more. Continue to simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the cranberries have softened and burst open, releasing their vibrant juices. The sauce will begin to thicken slightly.
  4. While the sauce simmers, prepare your cornstarch slurry. In a small separate bowl, whisk together the 2 tablespoons of cold water and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch until a smooth, lump-free mixture is formed.
  5. Once the cranberries have burst and the sauce has reached your desired consistency, stir the cornstarch slurry directly into the cranberry sauce. This will help to thicken the sauce further.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat immediately after stirring in the slurry. Allow the sauce to cool completely at room temperature. As it cools, it will continue to thicken to a lovely, spoonable consistency.

This recipe generously makes approximately 7 cups of delicious sauce, which is quite a lot! Don’t hesitate to freeze any extra portions for future meals or unexpected holiday cravings. It thaws beautifully and tastes just as fresh.
