Healthy Start, Happy Hearts: Fueling Families with Produce for Kids & Publix
As the sun rises, so does the opportunity to create memorable and nutritious moments, especially during the warmer months when schedules become a little more relaxed. Crafting a delicious and wholesome breakfast is a fantastic way to energize your family for the day ahead. Today, I’m thrilled to share a vibrant, easy-to-make breakfast idea that not only delights the taste buds but also supports an incredibly important cause: the Produce for Kids campaign in partnership with Publix Super Markets.
This annual initiative is more than just a grocery store promotion; it’s a powerful movement dedicated to promoting healthy eating habits among children and providing vital assistance to families battling food insecurity. The impact of this campaign is truly astounding. Last year alone, their collaborative efforts resulted in providing a staggering 2.2 million meals to local families in need. This incredible achievement underscores the profound difference we can make when we come together to support community health and well-being. It’s a testament to how simple choices in the grocery aisle can ripple out into significant positive change.
Making a Difference: The Produce for Kids & Publix Campaign Explained
The Produce for Kids and Publix campaign is an inspiring example of how businesses and consumers can unite for social good. This year’s campaign runs from June 2 to June 29, offering a focused window to contribute to this impactful mission. The initiative is robustly supported by 13 fresh fruit and vegetable suppliers, who are the backbone of its fundraising efforts. Here’s how it works: for every purchase you make at Publix stores of any fruits and vegetables from these participating brands (a list of which you can often find via in-store signage or on the Produce for Kids website), a portion of the proceeds is generously donated. These crucial funds go directly to local Feeding America food banks. These food banks play a critical role in distributing nutritious food to individuals and families facing hunger in our communities, ensuring that no one goes without essential sustenance.
To stay fully engaged and informed about all the exciting happenings during the campaign, I highly recommend joining the official Produce For Kids Campaign Page on Facebook. It’s an excellent resource for updates, healthy recipes, and community interaction. Plus, you’ll even have the fantastic opportunity to enter and win a $100 Publix gift card, adding another layer of excitement to your participation!
My passion lies deeply with any program or organization that champions healthy eating and extends a helping hand to feed hungry families. This core belief is precisely why I wholeheartedly admire and support everything Produce for Kids stands for. Their dedication to improving childhood nutrition and combating food insecurity resonates profoundly with me. I urge everyone to support them in any way you can. Keep an eye out for special signage at your local Publix, explore the wealth of healthy recipes on their user-friendly website, and share your own healthy creations and innovative ideas using the hashtag #produceforkids across social media. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to this vital cause.

Bringing Joy to the Plate: The Magic of Breakfast Fruit Skewers
If you’ve been a regular reader of my blog, you might have noticed a recurring theme: I typically lean towards practical, wholesome food rather than “cute” food. While I appreciate the artistry and fun of creatively presented dishes, I confess that intricate food styling isn’t my natural forte. My focus has always been on making food that is simply good and nourishing. However, when I stumbled upon these captivating Sunny Breakfast Fruit Skewers on the Produce for Kids website and later in their inspiring Healthy Family Classics Cookbook (and don’t forget to enter for a chance to win a copy of the cookbook here!), I knew this was a “cute food” endeavor I could absolutely master. What better time to infuse a little extra fun into our meals than during the summer, when kids are home, schedules are more flexible, and there’s a natural inclination for playful activities?
These Breakfast Fruit Skewers are a prime example of how easy and rewarding healthy eating can be. Assembling them was incredibly simple, making them perfect for busy mornings or as a fun activity to involve the kids. Knowing that my purchases of fresh mangoes and raspberries directly contribute to providing meals for those in need through the Produce for Kids Campaign at Publix adds an immense layer of satisfaction to every bite. This campaign embodies a truly brilliant concept: it subtly encourages us to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables to support a charitable cause, but in doing so, it simultaneously inspires us to eat healthier ourselves. I call that an absolute win-win! It’s a seamless integration of good nutrition and genuine philanthropy.
The beauty of fruit skewers lies in their versatility and visual appeal. They transform everyday fruits into an exciting, interactive meal. Kids love anything presented on a stick, and these skewers make consuming a variety of nutrients an enjoyable experience. Each skewer becomes a mini-adventure, packed with natural sweetness, vibrant colors, and essential vitamins.

I honestly cannot overstate how happy and excited my children were when they saw this fun little breakfast spread before them. The genuine smiles that lit up their faces were absolutely priceless, serving as a powerful and heartwarming reminder that I should definitely make an effort to create “cute food” more often! It’s not just about the nutritional value; it’s about the joy, the engagement, and the positive memories we create around food. These skewers brought an undeniable sparkle to our morning, transforming a simple meal into a delightful experience.

Beyond the visual appeal, these skewers pack a nutritional punch. The whole-grain waffles provide sustained energy and fiber, while the almond butter offers healthy fats and protein, keeping those little tummies full and satisfied. The fresh fruits – ripe bananas, juicy mangoes, and tart raspberries – deliver a wealth of vitamins, antioxidants, and natural sweetness. This combination makes for a perfectly balanced and incredibly tasty start to the day, setting a positive tone for healthy eating habits.
I hope you are having a fantastic week, filled with moments of joy and delicious food!

Breakfast Fruit Skewers: A Fun & Healthy Morning Treat
Yield: 4 servings, makes 8 delicious skewers

Ingredients:
- 4 frozen whole wheat waffles, thawed slightly and cut into quarters
- 1/2 cup creamy almond butter (or your favorite nut butter)
- 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and cut into 16 1-inch thick pieces
- 1 fresh Coast Tropical mango, peeled, pitted, and cut into 8 bite-sized pieces
- 16 sweet Driscolls raspberries
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened shredded coconut, optional (for added texture and flavor)
- A light drizzle of honey, optional (for a touch more sweetness)
Directions:
- Begin by spreading a thin, even layer of almond butter onto each quartered whole wheat waffle triangle. This provides a delightful creamy base and helps the fruit adhere.
- Carefully thread each skewer with your chosen ingredients, alternating for visual appeal. A good sequence could be: 2 raspberries, followed by 2 banana slices, then 2 waffle triangles, and finally 1 juicy piece of mango. Repeat this pattern until all ingredients are used up, creating 8 vibrant skewers.
- For an extra touch of gourmet sweetness and texture, drizzle the finished skewers with a little honey and sprinkle generously with shredded coconut, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Feel absolutely free to customize these skewers to suit your family’s preferences and dietary needs! Adjust the amounts and varieties of fruits based on what’s in season or what your kids love most. Think about adding blueberries, kiwi, grapes, or melon chunks for different colors and flavors.
For younger children or for a safer alternative to pointed wooden skewers, consider using plastic beverage stirrers or blunt-ended party picks. This makes them even more kid-friendly and safe for little hands.
You can also prepare many of the ingredients in advance, like cutting the waffles and some of the firmer fruits, to make assembly even quicker on a busy morning.
This delightful and wholesome recipe has been very slightly adapted from the creative minds at Produce For Kids, highlighting their commitment to healthy family meals.
