Reading Lives This December

December Reading List: Inspiring Memoirs for Cozy Winter Nights

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s an almost irresistible pull to cozy up indoors with a good book. December, with its festive atmosphere and the promise of a peaceful holiday break, offers the perfect opportunity to slow down, disconnect from daily demands, and dive into captivating stories. Lately, all I’ve craved is the quiet escape that only a book can provide, a true hibernation before the festive rush. I’m eagerly anticipating Christmas break with my family, where reading takes center stage.

Our household is already immersed in literary adventures. My son, ever the avid reader, has committed to re-reading the entire Harry Potter series, and he’s holding me accountable for starting book three. His reading journey has taken an unexpected turn this season: after fracturing his ankle, he now faces approximately six weeks of “down time” ahead. This silver lining means he’ll be breezing through the wizarding world at an impressive pace. It’s truly a blessing that he loves to read.

This month, my personal reading list has serendipitously focused on an incredible genre: memoirs. I recently finished an extraordinary book that has lingered with me, and I’m currently midway through another that feels incredibly inspiring. The three books I’m highlighting today all fall under this powerful category, offering a refreshing change of pace from my usual fiction reads. There’s something uniquely compelling about stepping into someone else’s real-life experiences, gaining insights, and finding universal truths within their personal journeys.

The Irresistible Allure of Memoirs: Why Real Stories Captivate Us

Memoirs, more than any other genre, invite us into the unfiltered realities of other lives. They are raw, honest, and often deeply vulnerable accounts of personal experiences that resonate with our own struggles, triumphs, and questions. Unlike biographies, which often cover an entire life from an objective distance, memoirs zero in on a specific period, theme, or transformation in an author’s life, allowing for an intimate, first-person perspective. This direct connection fosters empathy, broadens our understanding of the human condition, and frequently provides profound inspiration.

Reading a memoir is like having a profound conversation with someone who has walked a path you might recognize, or one you never imagined. It offers lessons learned, perspectives gained, and the comforting knowledge that we are not alone in our complex experiences. For those seeking personal growth, understanding, or simply a deep, meaningful narrative, memoirs stand out as an enriching choice. They remind us that every life holds a story worth telling, and often, a wisdom worth sharing.

Book Spotlight: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

The recommendation for Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken” came from countless friends, and when one mentioned the movie adaptation was due out on Christmas, I knew I couldn’t wait any longer. My determination to always read the book before seeing the film propelled me straight to Target to grab a paperback copy – no time for library waitlists on this one! The premise alone sounded incredibly intriguing, promising a story of extraordinary resilience and survival.

“Unbroken” is one of those rare narratives that imprints itself on your soul, staying with you long after you’ve turned the final page. It chronicles the incredible true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner whose B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific during World War II. What follows is an unbelievable saga of survival against all odds: forty-seven days adrift on a raft, enduring sharks, thirst, and starvation, only to be captured by the Japanese navy and subjected to brutal prisoner-of-war camps. The sheer volume of harrowing events and Zamperini’s unwavering spirit make it almost impossible to fathom that these events are real, and that these men truly lived to tell their tales.

Hillenbrand’s meticulous research and vivid storytelling bring Zamperini’s harrowing journey to life with astonishing detail. The book delves not just into physical endurance, but also the profound psychological and spiritual challenges faced by those who endured such unimaginable cruelty. It’s a testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit, a powerful exploration of perseverance, forgiveness, and the enduring will to live. “Unbroken” is more than just a war story; it’s a monumental achievement in non-fiction storytelling that will leave you breathless and deeply moved.

Book Spotlight: It Was Me All Along by Andie Mitchell

Are you familiar with the delightful and inspiring healthy living blog, Can You Stay For Dinner? If so, then you’ll be thrilled to know that its author, Andie Mitchell, has also penned this incredibly touching and, at times, heartbreaking memoir, “It Was Me All Along.” Andie is a truly inspiring and brave voice, as she openly and honestly shares the story of her lifelong challenge with eating, weight, and ultimately, self-acceptance.

In this candid memoir, Andie takes us on her journey to successfully shed over 100 pounds, but it’s far more than just a weight-loss narrative. She delves deep into the emotional complexities of her relationship with food, exploring how it became a source of comfort, control, and conflict throughout her life. Her confessions about secret eating, body image struggles, and the constant mental battle are remarkably relatable. Many of us grapple with similar issues concerning food, weight, and the challenge of loving ourselves for who we are, irrespective of societal pressures or personal ideals. This book courageously addresses these profound struggles from a deeply personal and vulnerable point of view.

I found myself breezing right through “It Was Me All Along,” eager to pick it up every chance I got. Andie’s authentic voice and her journey towards self-compassion are profoundly inspiring, especially during a time in my own life where I haven’t been feeling my healthiest or fittest. Having followed “Can You Stay For Dinner” for several years now, reading her memoir felt like getting to know Andie on an even deeper, more personal level. It’s a powerful reminder that true transformation begins not just with physical changes, but with a profound shift in how we perceive and treat ourselves.

Book Spotlight: Wild by Cheryl Strayed

My excitement to start “Wild” is palpable; this is my next literary adventure, highly recommended by my dear friend Kristen. True to form, it was another serendipitous Target paperback purchase. It’s been a while since I’ve actively bought books rather than relying on library checkouts, and acquiring two in one month feels like a small rebellion against my usual willpower. Resisting the urge to buy a new book every time I walk through the doors of Target, Barnes & Noble, or Costco requires immense discipline! However, I think I’ll treat myself a bit more often, especially when I know the book will continue its journey of being read by others.

Sharing books is one of my favorite practices; a well-read book finds new life in the hands of another. This particular copy of “Wild” is already earmarked for my neighbor once she finishes “Unbroken.” This practice makes every book purchase feel justified, knowing that the story will be experienced and appreciated by multiple readers. As for “Wild,” I honestly don’t know much about it beyond what’s hinted at on the cover – a woman embarking on an epic solo hike. This air of mystery only amplifies my anticipation. I’m incredibly anxious to dive in and discover Cheryl Strayed’s journey.

Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” recounts her decision, in the wake of personal tragedy and profound loss—her mother’s death, the scattering of her family, and the dissolution of her marriage—to hike over a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. With no prior long-distance hiking experience, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery, grief, and ultimately, healing. The book is lauded for its raw honesty, its vivid descriptions of the natural world, and its unflinching portrayal of physical and emotional endurance. It’s a story about finding strength in vulnerability, solace in the wilderness, and reclaiming one’s life through sheer grit and determination. Many readers have found it to be a powerful narrative on overcoming adversity and forging a path forward even when everything seems lost. I expect it to be a deeply moving and transformative read, perfectly capturing the spirit of resilience that defines the best memoirs.
