Unlocking Culinary Creativity: A Deep Dive into Food Blog Forum Orlando

For those who follow my culinary adventures on Twitter or Facebook, you might already know about my incredibly enriching experience at the Food Blog Forum Seminar in vibrant Orlando. This wasn’t just another conference; it was a powerful gathering of minds, a vibrant community born from the vision of Jaden and Scott of Steamy Kitchen, and Diane and Todd of White on Rice Couple. Their aim? To cultivate a space dedicated to the nuanced arts of food photography, the dynamic world of social media, and the ever-evolving technology that underpins the food blogosphere. More profoundly, it’s a testament to what Jaden affectionately calls the “spirit of generosity” – a shared desire among highly passionate individuals to impart knowledge, exchange experiences, and collectively elevate the craft of food blogging.

Connecting with the Culinary Community: Local Flavors and New Friendships

The anticipation leading up to this seminar was immense, particularly because it was held right here in my hometown! The chance to attend a premier food blogging event without traveling far was an absolute dream come true. Having previously only connected with a handful of food bloggers in real life, the prospect of meeting many more, especially my fellow Floridian food enthusiasts, filled me with unparalleled excitement. It’s one thing to interact online, but to share stories, ideas, and laughter in person adds an entirely new dimension to these digital relationships. The camaraderie was instant and deeply rewarding, fostering a sense of belonging that’s often hard to find.

(Among the wonderful faces were Joanne & Adam, Michelle, Merry-Jennifer, Denise, and Renee aka RJ Flamingo, all incredible talents in their own right.)

A Grand Kick-off: Whole Foods Market Orlando Style

The entire event, skillfully hosted by Julie, Dawn, and Jaden, truly exceeded all expectations. We commenced the weekend’s festivities with an unforgettable meet and greet at Whole Foods Market Orlando. Let me just say, Whole Foods truly understands the art of throwing an exceptional party! The atmosphere was buzzing with culinary energy; one room featured a captivating live cooking demo, while another beckoned guests with the irresistible aroma of a crème brûlée station. In between, an abundance of mouth-watering food and exquisite wines flowed freely, creating a gourmet paradise for all attendees.

A major highlight was the generous contribution from KerryGold, who delighted us with an incredible array of their premium cheeses. I was particularly mesmerized by the sheer beauty of a brie cake on display – a true masterpiece of culinary presentation. Though I sadly never managed to taste it (a genuine boo-hoo moment!), its visual appeal alone left a lasting impression. The event wasn’t just about indulgence; it was also an opportunity for connection and discovery. I even had the pleasure of meeting Julie, one of the Alkaline Sisters, who became my impromptu Whole Foods shopping buddy after the party. I introduced her to the delicious Joe’s Oats Veggie Burgers, and she, in turn, enlightened me about the wonderful Good Earth Tea, proving that even casual conversations at such events can lead to delightful new favorites.

A Knowledge Feast: Insights from Industry Leaders

Saturday was dedicated to an intensive day of learning and interaction, featuring some of the most influential figures in the food media industry. We had the distinct privilege of hearing from seasoned Food Editors Heather McPherson of the Orlando Sentinel and Jeff Houck of the Tampa Tribune. While some might get star-struck by celebrities like Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber, my excitement reaches a fever pitch when I get to meet revered food editors like Heather and Jeff. I’ve followed Heather’s work for many years, ever since my own tenure at the Orlando Sentinel, and have been a devoted fan ever since. These two not only shared an abundance of valuable insights into the world of food journalism – from pitching stories to understanding editorial calendars – but also captivated the audience with their fantastic chemistry, keeping us engaged and smiling throughout their session.

Our day was jam-packed with illuminating presentations from other exceptionally brilliant minds. Peter Scott from IZEA expertly guided us through the intricacies of SEO and the evolving landscape of social media sponsorships. His session demystified complex concepts, offering actionable strategies for improving blog visibility and effectively partnering with brands. Lindsay of Purr Design then provided essential advice on crafting blogs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional and user-friendly, emphasizing the importance of intuitive navigation and responsive design for an optimal reader experience. Helene Dujardin of Tartelette, a true artist, schooled us on the foundational principles and advanced techniques of food photography and styling, transforming how many of us view our cameras and subjects. Dawn delivered incredible tips on how to “write for the big boys,” empowering us with strategies for crafting compelling narratives and pitching to larger publications. And, of course, the power couple Jaden and Scott shared invaluable insights on fostering blog success through strategic personal branding and effective monetization strategies, offering a roadmap for sustainable growth in the competitive digital space.

Don’t we look studious, absorbing every piece of wisdom?

Generous Sponsors and Exciting Wins!

Oh, and did I mention the prizes? Goodness gracious, the sheer abundance and quality of the prizes were astounding! All were generously donated courtesy of our esteemed event sponsors, including culinary giants like KitchenAid, the comprehensive kitchenware provider Cooking.com, the iconic French cookware brand Le Creuset, the durable and high-performing Calphalon, our beloved dairy partner KerryGold, small appliance innovators West Bend, the trusted America’s Test Kitchen, the reliable Chicago Metallic, and the sharp minds behind EdgeWare. The atmosphere during the prize giveaways was electrifying, a testament to the community’s enthusiasm and the sponsors’ generosity. I was absolutely thrilled to walk away with a much-desired and greatly needed rice cooker, courtesy of Cooking.com! It was a perfect addition to my kitchen, a reminder of the wonderful event, and a testament to the power of a little luck.

Mastering the Lens: Helene Dujardin on Food Photography

A significant portion of our afternoon was dedicated to a session with the truly remarkable Helene Dujardin. I believe we were all eagerly anticipating our time with Helene, and she did not disappoint. Oh my goodness, she is simply the sweetest person, yet an absolutely incredible force behind the camera lens. She rocks, plain and simple. Her ability to capture the essence and beauty of food through photography is unparalleled, and her passion is infectious.

For a little over two years, I’ve owned my Canon Rebel, and I’ve always been grateful for the pictures it has produced. However, I shamelessly admit that I’ve been an “auto” girl – or a “no flash” girl. I just took pictures, without truly understanding the technicalities or artistry of photography. On Saturday, a profound “lightbulb moment” occurred for me as Helene eloquently spoke about the critical elements of light, mood, composition, styling, and many other advanced concepts. While some of the more technical aspects might have been a bit over my head at times, the overall message resonated deeply, reminding me that mastering any craft is all about taking baby steps. I left her session feeling a tangible connection to my camera, filled with newfound inspiration and an eagerness to experiment, to truly “play” with my settings and explore the creative possibilities that I previously overlooked.

The Heart of the Community: Connection and Camaraderie

There’s a truly unique and vibrant energy when you’re in a room teeming with fellow food bloggers. The overwhelming vibe is one of generosity, mutual support, and a collective eagerness to share what works, what inspires, and what challenges each person. It’s a space where competition takes a back seat to collaboration, and every success is celebrated collectively. I particularly cherished my time reconnecting with my not-so-new friends Merry-Jennifer, Julie, and Denise, whose insights and warmth are always a joy. Equally delightful were the connections forged with newer friends like Michelle, Julius aka Droolius, Julie, Jaclyn, and Brie, among so many other inspiring individuals. Each conversation was a thread in the rich tapestry of this incredible food blogging community, reaffirming the power of shared passion and collective growth.

Our day of intensive knowledge acquisition and community building concluded precisely as any day spent among foodies should:

By eating, of course!

A Grand Culinary Finale at McCormick & Schmick’s

Just when we thought the experience couldn’t possibly get any better, we were whisked away to McCormick & Schmick’s for an evening of unparalleled indulgence. We were welcomed with an exquisite spread that included artfully prepared sushi, succulent shrimp, mouth-watering Kobe sliders, refreshing sangria, and an overall display of truly exceptional hospitality. The ambiance was perfect, allowing for relaxed conversation and further networking while savoring gourmet delights. It was the ideal conclusion to a day filled with learning, connection, and inspiration, leaving us all with a lasting taste of culinary excellence and the warmth of newfound friendships.

Okay, I’m already counting down the days and ready to experience it all over again!
