Empire State Escapades

Stepping back into New York City after decades felt like uncovering a forgotten chapter of my life. My recent weekend trip to NYC wasn’t just a simple visit; it was a deeply nostalgic journey back to my roots, a place I hadn’t truly experienced since I was a teenager. Having moved from Mount Vernon, NY, to Florida at the tender age of ten, the vibrant pulse of the city and its unmistakable landscape instantly transported me back in time. The moment our taxi began its journey, and I saw the familiar old brick buildings, the majestic, bare oak trees lining the streets, the iconic bridges stretching across the water, and the colorful graffiti adorning various surfaces, a wave of childhood memories washed over me. I hadn’t anticipated such a powerful emotional reunion with the city, yet everything felt incredibly familiar—the unique energy, the urban scenery, the timeless allure. Despite being miles from my childhood neighborhood, that quintessential “New York state of mind” was palpable, a feeling that resonates deep within anyone who’s ever called this dynamic metropolis home.

The contrast between New York and my current home in Florida couldn’t be more striking. This weekend truly highlighted how much I’ve adapted to the slower, more relaxed pace of the Sunshine State. I found myself yearning for the simple comfort of my flip-flops and the lush green grass underfoot. Upon my return, one of the first things I noticed was the moon—a clear, unobstructed view that I realized I had missed entirely during my time in the city. Whether it was the towering skyscrapers blocking the sky or the sheer sensory overload that made me hesitant to pause and gaze upwards, the celestial beauty seemed absent from my urban experience. City living, especially in a place like NYC, is undeniably exhilarating; I adore the rich culture, the diverse culinary scene, and the sheer freedom of walking everywhere instead of relying on a car. Yet, despite its undeniable charm, there’s an inherent truth: there’s no place quite like home, and for me, that’s currently sunny Florida. It was a profound reminder of the different rhythms of life and the unique beauty each environment offers.

Our exciting NYC adventure was primarily centered around my husband’s company holiday party, as their main office is situated there. We were fortunate to travel with his team, a lively group that also happens to be some of our closest friends. This made the entire experience even more memorable, filled with endless laughter, good company, and, of course, incredible food and drink. Picture this: a group of twenty enthusiastic yet hilariously clueless adults attempting to navigate the intricate labyrinth of the NYC subway system for the first time – it was an adventure in itself, punctuated by wrong turns, sudden bursts of laughter, and ultimately, triumphant arrivals! Beyond the official holiday festivities, we indulged in some much-needed “grown-up fun,” creating memories that will undoubtedly be retold for years. And speaking of memories, let me emphasize this: the food in New York City absolutely captivated my senses. Every bite was an experience, a symphony of flavors that truly rocked my world and solidified New York’s reputation as a global culinary capital.

For the initial two days of our New York City exploration, I found myself in a state of sheer city shock, utterly absorbed by the vibrant energy and countless sights. This blissful immersion meant that, to my slight regret, I completely forgot to capture any of our incredible culinary experiences with my camera. It wasn’t until our very last meal, when the spell of the city had somewhat settled, that I finally remembered to pull out my phone and start snapping photos. Fortunately, this final meal turned out to be my absolute favorite of the entire trip, making the belated photographic effort perfectly timed to capture its unforgettable essence. This particular dining experience left such a lasting impression that I’m thrilled to share every delicious detail, proving that even a moment of forgetfulness couldn’t overshadow the remarkable flavors of our NYC culinary journey.

Our friend Gail, a true New York culinary connoisseur, highly recommended a particular spot for brunch in Tribeca, conveniently located near our accommodations. So, on a bright Sunday morning, with steaming cups of coffee in hand, we embarked on a pleasant stroll of a few blocks to reach Locanda Verde. Even at brunch hour, the restaurant was bustling with a lively crowd, a testament to its popularity. We managed to secure a couple of prime spots at the bar, offering us a front-row view of the vibrant atmosphere. Our order was swift: refreshing Bloody Marys and, crucially, the ricotta plate that both online reviews and Gail herself had raved about. This dish, a masterpiece of simplicity and flavor, featured exquisite Sheep’s Milk Ricotta, delicately drizzled with fragrant truffle honey, and served alongside beautifully burnt orange toast. The combination was nothing short of divine – a truly unforgettable gastronomic experience that I will undoubtedly dream about until my next visit. This exceptional brunch set a high bar for our remaining meals in the city, perfectly showcasing Tribeca’s sophisticated dining scene.

The sheep’s milk ricotta with truffle honey and burnt orange toast at Locanda Verde was, quite simply, transcendent. The creamy, ethereal texture of the ricotta paired exquisitely with the earthy sweetness of the truffle honey, while the subtly bitter, caramelized notes of the burnt orange toast provided a perfect counterpoint. It was a dish that lingered on the palate and in memory, a testament to thoughtful ingredient pairing and masterful execution. I’ve found myself reminiscing about it frequently, eagerly anticipating the day I can savor it once more in the heart of Tribeca.

While I was reveling in my ricotta heaven, my husband embarked on his own culinary journey with a magnificent lamb sausage sandwich. This hearty creation was generously filled with tender peperonata, savory broccoli rabe, and a delicate spread of ricotta, all nestled within some of the softest, freshest bread I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The blend of rich lamb, vibrant vegetables, and creamy cheese on that perfectly baked bread was a symphony of flavors, a truly satisfying and memorable brunch choice that perfectly complemented the bustling energy of Locanda Verde. It showcased the restaurant’s commitment to robust, flavorful dishes that truly capture the essence of Italian-inspired cuisine.

For my main dish, I opted for an enticing baked eggs creation: eggs perfectly cooked with creamy corona beans, robust Tuscan kale, and luscious mozzarella. This dish was, without exaggeration, to die for. The rich, savory broth infused with the flavors of kale and beans, combined with the perfectly runny yolks and melted mozzarella, created a truly comforting yet sophisticated experience. I was so utterly captivated that I immediately resolved to recreate this culinary masterpiece in my own kitchen very soon. Using some of the leftover crusty bread from our incredible ricotta dish, I delighted in scooping up every last drop of the flavorful egg and bean mixture. Oh, my heaven! It was a moment of pure gastronomic bliss, a highlight of our Tribeca brunch and a testament to the vibrant, innovative spirit of New York City’s breakfast and brunch scene. These are the kinds of meals that make a weekend getaway truly unforgettable.

Just looking at these mouth-watering pictures again stirs a fresh wave of hunger! Locanda Verde was certainly a standout, but our New York City culinary tour didn’t end there. We explored several other exceptional establishments, each offering its own unique flavor of the city.

Our first brunch experience was at Market Table, a charming spot tucked away on a side street. Both my husband Larry and I were utterly blown away by their crispy skate sandwich—it was truly out of this world, a testament to innovative American cuisine. The menu was thoughtfully curated, and the atmosphere was simply delightful: casual, homey, and bathed in natural light thanks to its many windows. It offered a perfect blend of sophistication and comfort, making it an ideal brunch destination in the West Village.

For a lively dinner, we headed to Dos Caminos, where we indulged in fantastic fish tacos, an array of awesome salsas, and perfectly fresh guacamole. Their seasonal sangria was a revelation, a drink I genuinely, genuinely enjoyed. The vibrant upstairs dining room led to an equally inviting downstairs bar area, complete with comfy couches and great music, perfect for extending the evening with a few more drinks if the mood struck. It was a fantastic spot for lively conversation and flavorful Mexican fare.

Saturday night brought us to Trattoria Cinque for a memorable group dinner. Two of our friends eloquently described the ambiance as ‘sexy,’ and I couldn’t agree more. The restaurant effortlessly accommodated our large group, providing a wonderfully comfortable and inviting setting. The atmosphere was refined yet relaxed, with an excellent bar area perfect for pre-dinner cocktails. The food was equally impressive; the pear, gorgonzola, and truffle oil pizza was an unexpected delight, a harmonious blend of sweet, savory, and earthy notes. But the real showstopper was the homemade pappardelle with oxtail—a rich, deeply satisfying dish that spoke volumes of authentic Italian culinary craftsmanship.

And for a truly unique late-night experience, we stumbled upon what we affectionately dubbed a ‘disco diner’ on Friday night. Imagine this: the best egg sandwich and fries you’ve ever tasted, served in a dining room where a live DJ was spinning tracks! It was an unexpected, utterly joyful discovery. After this fantastic meal, a truly New York moment unfolded when, unable to flag down a traditional taxi, we literally hopped into a stretch Hummer limo that conveniently pulled up – because, as we quickly learned, sometimes that’s just how you roll in the city that never sleeps. It was the perfect, impromptu end to an evening filled with fun and delicious surprises. We even woke up to the hilarious sight of random SantaCon participants outside our hotel and all over the city on Saturday – a festive, if slightly baffling, spectacle we weren’t prepared for but thoroughly enjoyed!

While it might sound like our NYC weekend getaway was solely dedicated to eating and partying, I assure you, we carved out ample time to soak in the iconic sights and even catch a Broadway show, adding another layer of quintessential New York experience to our trip. The city offers an endless array of attractions, and we made sure to immerse ourselves in its cultural tapestry, balancing our culinary adventures with memorable sightseeing. Every corner turned revealed a new facet of this incredible metropolis.

Our evening at the theater was truly special! We were captivated by an absolutely fantastic show, a highlight of our trip to New York City. The energy of a live Broadway performance is simply unparalleled, and this one left us utterly thrilled. The magic didn’t end with the final curtain; we were fortunate enough to meet some of the talented actors backstage after the show, an experience that added an extra layer of excitement to our night. We collected autographs, snapped a few memorable pictures, and exchanged happy holiday wishes, making for a truly personal and unforgettable encounter. It was a wonderful glimpse behind the scenes of one of NYC’s most cherished traditions.

Among the actors we met was the charming Dule Hill, recognizable from his roles in “The West Wing” and the popular show “Psych,” where his comedic timing and talent always shone through. He was incredibly gracious, making the experience even more special.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Mekhi Pfifer, a distinguished actor known for his compelling performances in various film and television roles. His presence added another star-studded moment to our backstage experience, further cementing the magic of Broadway.

And then there was this guy, who always manages to steal the show, at least in my heart…

Oh wait, that’s just my wonderful husband! He’s always a star in my eyes, and sharing these unforgettable NYC moments with him made the entire trip even more special.

Returning home after such an exhilarating weekend in the Big Apple brought a comfortable sense of familiarity and peace. While the whirlwind of New York City was thrilling, there’s truly nothing quite like stepping back into my own kitchen, surrounded by the warmth and comfort of home. Now, it’s time to shift gears from city adventures to culinary creativity. The delightful indulgences of the weekend have certainly left their mark, and I’m ready to embrace a new routine, balancing healthier meals with the exciting preparations for the upcoming holiday cooking and baking season. This trip was a perfect blend of nostalgia, excitement, and incredible flavors, reminding me of the diverse joys life has to offer, both in bustling metropolises and in the quiet comfort of home.
