My September Reading List: A Journey Through Recently Read and Current Literary Escapes

There’s a unique magic that accompanies the turn of each season, and for many, myself included, September ushers in a renewed passion for reading. The slightly cooler weather, the anticipation of cozy evenings – it all sets the perfect scene for curling up with a captivating book. Today, I’m thrilled to share an updated glimpse into my literary world, featuring a collection of books I’ve recently devoured and a couple that are currently holding my full attention.

Earlier this year, I embarked on a personal reading challenge, setting an ambitious goal on Goodreads to read 30 books by the end of 2015. I’m excited to report that I’ve just updated my progress, and I’m currently at a fantastic 20 books! This significant milestone has me feeling incredibly optimistic about reaching my target, and I truly believe it’s within reach.

Embracing the Audiobook Revolution: How I’m Reading More Than Ever

My ability to hit such a high number is largely thanks to a wonderful discovery: audiobooks via Audible. I simply cannot express enough how much I adore listening to books. It has revolutionized my reading habits, allowing me to consume stories and knowledge in ways I never thought possible. From leisurely walks through my neighborhood to long drives in the car, waiting for appointments, or even tackling household chores like folding laundry, audiobooks transform otherwise mundane moments into rich, immersive literary experiences.

There’s something incredibly relaxing about having a story unfold in your ears, especially on days when my eyes are tired from screen time or my brain feels too fatigued to focus on the printed page. Audiobooks offer an accessible and deeply enjoyable alternative, making reading a constant, comforting companion throughout my day. While I’ve certainly embraced this modern way of reading, my love for the tactile experience of a “real” book, the turning of pages, and the scent of paper, remains as strong as ever.

So, whether you prefer the rustle of pages or the soothing narration of a skilled voice actor, there’s always a story waiting to be discovered. Here’s a closer look at what has been gracing my reading list recently:

Recently Read: Unforgettable Stories and Inspiring Journeys

My recent reads have been a delightful mix of heartwarming tales, compelling dramas, and emotional sagas. Each book offered a unique window into different lives and perspectives, leaving a lasting impression.

Happiness For Beginners by Katherine Center

This book was an absolute breath of fresh air, a truly feel-good read that I breezed through with immense enjoyment. Katherine Center has a remarkable way of crafting characters that feel authentic and situations that resonate deeply. The story centers around Helen, a 32-year-old woman grappling with the aftermath of a divorce, who makes the unconventional decision to attend a three-week wilderness survival retreat. What unfolds is a journey not just through rugged landscapes, but also through profound self-discovery and personal growth.

I found myself completely captivated by Helen’s transformation. Watching her step outside her comfort zone, forge unexpected connections with fellow retreat participants – individuals she might never have encountered in her everyday life – and confront her vulnerabilities was incredibly inspiring. The narrative beautifully explores themes of healing, resilience, and the importance of opening oneself up to new experiences and relationships, even when it feels terrifying. It’s a powerful reminder that happiness often lies just beyond the boundaries of our perceived limitations. If you’re looking for an uplifting story with genuine character development and a hopeful message, this one is an absolute must-read.

Whether you prefer a physical copy, an ebook for your Kindle, or the immersive experience of an audiobook on Audible, you can find Happiness For Beginners readily available on Amazon. Don’t forget to check your local library as well!

One Plus One by Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes has a knack for writing compelling, character-driven stories, and One Plus One is no exception. This was another book I devoured quickly, drawn in by its charming and often humorous narrative. The story introduces us to Jess Thomas, a single mother struggling to make ends meet for her two quirky children, and Ed Nicholls, a wealthy tech entrepreneur whose life has recently taken an unexpected downturn. Their paths cross in the most unlikely of circumstances, setting the stage for a classic “opposites attract” romance.

What I particularly enjoyed about this novel was the authentic portrayal of its characters. Jess is fiercely devoted and resilient, though at times endearingly chaotic. Ed, despite his privileged background, is battling his own demons. Their interactions are filled with both tension and tender moments, leading to a heartwarming and often laugh-out-loud journey. Moyes expertly weaves together themes of family, unexpected love, and finding hope in challenging situations. While the romantic storyline feels familiar, it’s executed with such warmth and wit that it never feels cliché. It’s a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys a heartwarming contemporary romance with a touch of realism and a cast of memorable, slightly dysfunctional characters.

For those eager to dive into this delightful tale, One Plus One is available on Amazon in various formats, including paperback, hardback, Kindle ebook, and audiobook.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

This novel was a truly captivating and profoundly moving experience, especially in its audiobook format. Celeste Ng’s storytelling is masterful, creating an atmospheric and deeply emotional narrative that pulled at my heartstrings from beginning to end. The story opens with the mysterious death of Lydia Lee, the middle child of a Chinese American family in 1970s Ohio. Her parents, James and Marilyn, and her siblings are left to piece together the events leading to her demise, revealing the intricate web of secrets, desires, and unspoken dreams that permeate their lives.

Ng crafts each character with such incredible depth and nuance that I felt an immense sense of empathy for every member of the Lee family. She delves into their individual struggles, their unfulfilled aspirations, and the burdens they carry, illustrating how the weight of expectations and cultural pressures can shape and sometimes fracture family dynamics. While this book undeniably carries a tragic undertone and elicited moments of profound sadness, its power lies in its sensitive exploration of identity, race, gender roles, and the complexities of familial love. It’s a beautifully written novel that will stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page, prompting reflection on communication and understanding within relationships. I highly recommend it for readers who appreciate literary fiction with a strong emotional core.

You can discover Everything I Never Told You on Amazon, available in paperback, hardback, for Kindle readers, or as an engaging audiobook.

As one chapter closes, another begins! I’m currently immersed in two intriguing stories that are already proving to be engrossing. The thrill of starting a new book, of stepping into an unknown world, is always a delightful part of the reading journey.

September Reading List: Books I've read and books I'm currently reading

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

I’ve just embarked on this one via audiobook, and from the very first chapter, Mary Kubica has proven her prowess in crafting psychological suspense. The premise is instantly gripping: Mia Dennett, the daughter of a prominent Chicago judge, disappears after a one-night stand, leaving her family desperate for answers. When she eventually returns, she remembers nothing about what happened to her, and the only person who can shed light on her abduction, her captor, is nowhere to be found.

Kubica is known for her intricate plots and unexpected twists, and I can already sense that this novel will be a rollercoaster of emotions and revelations. The alternating perspectives and non-linear timeline promise a complex narrative that will keep me guessing. I’m eager to unravel the mystery surrounding Mia’s disappearance and discover the dark secrets that lie beneath the surface. If you’re a fan of thrillers that delve deep into the human psyche and keep you on the edge of your seat, this might be your next obsession.

For those who love a good mystery, The Good Girl is readily available on Amazon in paperback, hardback, Kindle format, and as an audiobook.

September Reading List: Books I've read and books I'm currently reading

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

I’m already halfway through this compelling novel by Lisa Genova, and I’m finding it incredibly difficult to put down. Genova has a remarkable ability to blend profound human stories with complex neurological conditions, making her books both enlightening and deeply moving. In Left Neglected, we meet Sarah Nickerson, a career-driven mother of three whose life is irrevocably altered after a devastating car accident. The accident leaves her with a rare form of brain damage called “left neglect,” a condition that literally prevents her from seeing or acknowledging anything on her left side.

The novel explores not only the physical and mental challenges Sarah faces but also the emotional toll on her relationships and her sense of identity. It’s a powerful examination of adaptation, resilience, and the subtle ways our brains perceive the world. Having read Genova’s previous work, Still Alice – which remains one of my all-time favorite and highly recommended reads for its empathetic portrayal of Alzheimer’s – I came into Left Neglected with high expectations, and it has not disappointed. Her writing is always informative yet incredibly accessible, drawing you into the protagonist’s world with sensitivity and insight. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in medical fiction, human psychology, or simply a story about overcoming extraordinary adversity.

If you’re intrigued by Sarah’s journey, you can find Left Neglected on Amazon, available in paperback, hardback, for Kindle, or as an audiobook.

I hope these book recommendations spark your interest and perhaps inspire your next read! There’s nothing quite like discovering a story that resonates with you, transports you to another world, or offers a fresh perspective on life. Happy reading, whether you’re turning pages or enjoying a captivating narration.
