A Real Look Inside: Alyssa from Everyday Maven Shares Her Fridge Essentials
Hello everyone! My name is Alyssa, and I’m delighted to be visiting today from Everyday Maven to give you a candid look inside our family’s refrigerator. At Everyday Maven, my passion is to share real food recipes crafted with clean, wholesome ingredients. As a busy mom, I wholeheartedly believe that delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. While I absolutely refuse to sacrifice taste, my recipes are designed to be relatively easy to prepare, fitting seamlessly into the rhythm of family life.
I genuinely adore this ‘what’s in your fridge’ series. There’s something uniquely insightful about peeking into other people’s refrigerators; it offers a fascinating window into their daily lives, their eating habits, and the culinary philosophy that guides their homes and kitchens. It’s a truly personal and revealing experience.
Confession time: taking pictures of my fridge for this feature turned out to be quite an adventure, bordering on stressful! The lighting in my kitchen, to be frank, isn’t exactly professional studio quality. And with one of those popular side-by-side fridge/freezer combos, capturing a comprehensive, well-lit shot of everything proved to be more challenging than anticipated. I gave it my best effort, however, enduring countless photo attempts and the relentless beeping of the fridge warning me to close the door. Eventually, I decided these images captured the essence well enough, and it was time to call it a day. Despite the struggle, I’m excited to unveil the true contents of our fridge, perfectly imperfect as they may be!
Embracing Seasonal Eating While Maintaining Core Staples
It’s important to preface this by saying that much of our fresh produce – items like avocados, onions, garlic, tomatoes, and various squash, along with fruits such as apples, pears, bananas, and melons – typically doesn’t make it into our refrigerator. These items are usually stored at room temperature until they’re cut, cooked, or require refrigeration for preservation. Consequently, the specific fruits and vegetables you’ll find in our fridge fluctuate significantly with the changing seasons, reflecting our commitment to eating fresh, local, and seasonal produce whenever possible. However, amidst this seasonal rotation, there are certain foundational items that are almost perpetually present. These ten staples form the backbone of our kitchen, ensuring we’re always prepared for healthy, delicious meals, regardless of the time of year.
-
Eggs: The Versatile Kitchen Workhorse
Eggs are an undeniable cornerstone of our daily diet, and you’ll always find a generous supply in our fridge. They serve as a quick, protein-packed breakfast almost every morning, but their utility extends far beyond that. From enriching homemade mayonnaise to lending structure to delectable puddings and fluffy pancakes, eggs are incredibly versatile. We prioritize sourcing good quality eggs, often opting for pastured or organic varieties, as the flavor and nutritional profile are simply superior. In addition to raw eggs, you’ll frequently discover a tub of perfectly hard-boiled eggs tucked away, ready for a quick snack, salad topping, or a convenient addition to lunchboxes. They truly are an indispensable ingredient in our real food kitchen.

Condiments and Flavor Enhancers: Elevating Every Dish
What food blogger worth their salt isn’t utterly obsessed with condiments and flavor enhancers? These are the secret weapons that transform simple ingredients into extraordinary meals, and our fridge is always well-stocked with a diverse array. Our most frequently used condiments include a variety of mustards – spicy, Dijon, and classic yellow – alongside an impressive collection of hot sauces that cater to every heat preference. We also rely heavily on Asian ingredients for their complex umami and aromatic notes, such as toasted sesame oil, fish sauce, coconut aminos (a fantastic soy-free alternative), tamari, tamarind paste, and, of course, Sriracha. Beyond these, I consistently keep anchovy paste on hand for a depth of savory flavor, tahini for creamy dressings and spreads, miso paste for its probiotic benefits and rich taste, fresh ginger root for its vibrant warmth, and grated Locatelli cheese for that salty, aged perfection. These items ensure that a burst of flavor is always just a spoonful away.

Pickled and Fermented Foods: Gut Health and Zesty Flavors
Our refrigerator is a vibrant hub of pickled and fermented foods, a testament to our commitment to gut health and bold flavors. My husband and I make a conscious effort to incorporate at least one fermented food into our breakfast each day. Most recently, our go-to has been kimchi, and we’re fortunate that our local Costco offers a fantastic deal on a generously sized tub of this spicy, probiotic-rich cabbage. Beyond kimchi, you’ll consistently find classic pickles, briny olives, tangy sauerkraut, and occasionally even pickled herring. A personal favorite that’s always stocked are my Homemade Pickled Jalapeños, which add a perfect kick to countless dishes. I also enjoy brewing my own Kombucha, though I took a hiatus during the colder winter months. I’m eagerly planning to restart my brewing adventures in the coming weeks, ensuring a continuous supply of this effervescent, beneficial beverage.
-
Bacon: A Family Favorite Indulgence
There’s one item in our fridge that holds a special, almost sacred place, particularly for my son: bacon. He is, to put it mildly, completely obsessed. This means we are always, without fail, stocked with bacon, not just in the refrigerator for immediate use but also in the freezer for future cravings and meal planning. Whether it’s for a special breakfast, crumbled over salads, or incorporated into various savory dishes, bacon is a beloved staple that brings undeniable joy to our family meals. We often opt for high-quality, uncured varieties to ensure the best flavor and fewer additives, making this indulgence a truly satisfying one.
-
Defrosting Tray: A Kitchen Hack for Cleanliness and Efficiency
One of my most indispensable kitchen hacks, and a permanent fixture in my fridge, is a dedicated half sheet pan used as a “defrost tray.” This simple yet brilliant system effectively contains any potential leaks or mess that can occur when defrosting meats, poultry, pork, or seafood. It’s a major time-saver, preventing me from having to meticulously clean the entire fridge interior if something drips. Instead, if there’s a spill, I can simply toss the sheet pan directly into the dishwasher, making cleanup effortless and hygienic. This small organizational strategy significantly contributes to maintaining a cleaner, more efficient kitchen, minimizing stress during meal preparation, and ensuring food safety by keeping potential contaminants isolated.
-
Greens and Vegetables: Fueling Healthy Meals
Our refrigerator is equipped with two dedicated vegetable drawers, each serving a specific purpose in maximizing the freshness and usability of our produce. The top drawer, featuring humidity control, is meticulously reserved for delicate salad ingredients and fresh herbs. Here you’ll invariably find some variety of crisp lettuce or mixed greens, alongside crunchy cucumbers, vibrant carrots, and whatever fresh herbs we currently have on hand, ready to elevate any dish. The bottom drawer is dedicated to the more robust vegetables that form the foundation of our side dishes or are integrated into our main meals. This drawer often houses hearty greens like kale, versatile zucchini (perfect for spiralizing into noodles), substantial cauliflower (ideal for ricing or mashing into creamy sides), and a selection of other seasonal vegetables that are either in peak season or an exceptional deal at the market. This organized approach ensures we always have fresh, nutrient-dense options readily available to support our healthy eating habits.
-
Citrus: The Brightening Essential
I’ve heard whispers of a lime shortage circulating, but fortunately, it hasn’t impacted us here in our local area—at least not yet! Citrus fruits are an absolute non-negotiable in our kitchen, and I’m a huge fan of Trader Joe’s bags of organic lemons and limes. At an incredibly affordable $1.99 per bag, I can consistently keep both these essential fruits on hand. Lemons and limes are invaluable for adding a bright, zesty burst to nearly any dish, from savory marinades and dressings to refreshing beverages and even baked goods. Their acidity not only enhances flavors but can also tenderize meats and prevent oxidation in fresh produce. Having them readily available ensures that a vibrant, fresh note is always within reach, effortlessly elevating our culinary creations.
-
Dark Chocolate: A Sweet Indulgence
What more needs to be said about this essential? The presence of dark chocolate in the fridge is, in my opinion, a universal truth and a non-negotiable for anyone who appreciates a simple, yet profound, pleasure. Everyone should absolutely have chocolate in their fridge! Beyond its sheer deliciousness, quality dark chocolate, consumed in moderation, offers a delightful moment of indulgence and even boasts antioxidant properties. It’s the perfect little treat to satisfy a sweet craving, to enjoy with a cup of coffee, or to simply savor on its own. It’s a small luxury that brings immense joy and is always a welcome sight in our refrigerator.
-
Coffee & Wine: Daily Rituals and Relaxation
Living in Seattle, a city renowned for its vibrant coffee culture, it’s virtually impossible not to be a frequent coffee drinker. Our fridge is always home to our carefully selected organic, fair-trade coffee, ensuring a delicious and ethically sourced start to our mornings. Alongside it, you’ll find my homemade creamer, a staple that adds a creamy, flavorful touch to our daily brews. While coffee is a cherished ritual, we have been consciously working to moderate our consumption a bit. And, for good measure, you’ll also invariably find some wine chilling, ready to unwind with at the end of a busy day or to share with friends. These two beverages represent both the invigorating start to our day and the relaxing transition into our evenings.

The Freezers: Essential for Stocking and Meal Prep
A comprehensive tour of what’s in my fridge wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the critical role of our freezers. We have a side-by-side refrigerator in our kitchen, which, like many, comes with a rather compact freezer compartment. This smaller freezer is strategically utilized for immediate access items: storing leftover meals for quick lunches, keeping various flours, nuts, and seeds fresh, and holding frozen fruit specifically for our morning smoothies. Beyond these essentials, it barely accommodates ice. However, the true powerhouse of our food storage is the full-size upright freezer located in our garage. This dedicated unit is meticulously stocked with larger quantities of meats, an abundance of seasonal frozen vegetables, and generous batches of homemade stocks and broths. This dual-freezer system is absolutely vital for efficient meal planning, bulk purchasing, and ensuring we always have a readily available supply of nutritious ingredients to support our real food lifestyle, minimize food waste, and maximize convenience.
Thank you so incredibly much for having me here today, Aggie! It was a true pleasure to share this glimpse into my kitchen with your wonderful readers.
