Embark on a delightful day excursion to the renowned Fess Parker Winery in Santa Barbara, a highlight of your unforgettable Princess Cruises journey along the stunning California coast.

This comprehensive guide is part of a series exploring the unique destinations and experiences offered by Princess Cruises.
Discovering the Joys of Cruise Excursions: Santa Barbara’s Allure
One of the most exhilarating aspects of cruising is the opportunity to step ashore and immerse yourself in a new destination. The West Coast Getaway Princess Cruise, an enchanting voyage that hugs the picturesque California coastline, offers just that. My recent experience sailing along this iconic stretch of land brought me to the sun-kissed shores of Santa Barbara and the verdant wine country of Ensenada. As a fervent admirer of wine regions, I was captivated by the chance to explore these new-to-me locales, indulging in their distinctive culinary offerings and, of course, their exceptional wines.
Our journey’s port of call in Santa Barbara was nothing short of magical. Nestled just north of bustling Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is affectionately known as the “American Riviera,” a moniker that perfectly encapsulates its alluring blend of Mediterranean charm, breathtaking natural beauty, and sophisticated coastal lifestyle. The very sound of “American Riviera” evokes images of azure skies, pristine beaches, and a relaxed elegance – and Santa Barbara certainly delivers. We docked offshore, a classic cruise experience, and enjoyed a charming tender ride into the vibrant port. The scene that unfolded before us was magnificent: a bustling harbor dotted with an array of boats, from quaint fishing vessels to grand yachts, all framed by majestic mountains and swaying palm trees, creating a truly idyllic backdrop.

From Coastal Charm to Wine Country Serenity: The Santa Ynez Valley
The beauty of Santa Barbara was truly exceptional, enhanced by a sky of perfect blue that day. Our wine tasting excursion took us on a scenic drive from the vibrant coastal city, winding through picturesque landscapes and into the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. This region, renowned for its viticulture, served as our gateway to the highly anticipated family-owned Fess Parker Winery, where we were destined to spend a memorable afternoon savoring local wines and gourmet food. The journey itself was an integral part of the experience.
The drive into the Santa Ynez Valley was absolutely idyllic. As we transitioned from the oceanfront to the rolling hills, the scenery transformed into a canvas of tranquil beauty. Verdant mountains stood majestically in the distance, their slopes dotted with ancient oak trees and meticulously cultivated vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the subtle scents of the countryside. It was a profoundly peaceful setting, one where you could easily forget the proximity of the bustling Pacific Coast, fully immersing yourself in the serene embrace of wine country. This journey underscored the diverse natural beauty that California has to offer, from its stunning coastline to its fertile agricultural valleys.

Fess Parker Winery: A Taste of Legacy in the Santa Ynez Valley
The Fess Parker Winery is more than just a place to taste wine; it’s a destination steeped in history and a testament to the Parker family’s dedication to quality winemaking. Established by the late Fess Parker, a legendary actor known for his roles as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, the winery reflects his pioneering spirit and love for the Santa Ynez Valley. The estate itself is beautifully maintained, offering a welcoming ambiance that combines rustic charm with refined elegance. Their focus on cultivating premium varietals, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, has earned them a stellar reputation within the California wine scene.
Our exclusive wine tasting experience unfolded in the charming outdoor patio area, an ideal setting bathed in the gentle California sun. Here, we were introduced to an impressive selection of approximately eight different wines, each thoughtfully paired with an exquisite array of dishes. These culinary masterpieces were prepared by the immensely talented Pascale Beale, a celebrated local cookbook author, specialty shop owner, and a true culinary genius. While I anticipated the opportunity to sample exceptional wines, the food proved to be an unexpected and truly delightful bonus. It reaffirmed my long-standing appreciation for the distinctively fresh flavors found in California cuisine, tasting as if every ingredient had been harvested directly from a backyard garden. This profound sense of freshness echoed my previous adventures in Napa a few years ago, and it was equally palpable during our unforgettable lunch at Fess Parker.
Pascale’s culinary philosophy resonated deeply with me. Her approach centers on celebrating the integrity of the ingredients, preparing them simply and showcasing their inherent quality, all while prioritizing seasonal produce. This focus results in dishes that are both elegant and approachable, allowing the natural flavors to truly shine through. The marriage of Fess Parker’s fine wines with Pascale Beale’s expertly crafted, ingredient-driven cuisine created a symphony for the senses, elevating the entire tasting experience into a truly gourmet event. It was a perfect illustration of how well-executed food and wine pairings can complement and enhance each other, leaving a lasting impression on the palate and in memory.

A Gastronomic Journey: Pascale Beale’s Exquisite Menu
The carefully curated menu by Pascale Beale was a testament to her culinary prowess and her commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a masterpiece, designed to complement the Fess Parker wines and delight the palate. Here’s a closer look at the remarkable spread we enjoyed:
- **Plum-Pluot & Goat Cheese Bruschetta (pictured above):** This starter was a vibrant explosion of flavors and textures. The sweetness of ripe plums and pluots, with their unique blend of plum and apricot notes, was perfectly balanced by the creamy tang of goat cheese. Served on crisp, toasted bruschetta, it offered a delightful interplay of soft and crunchy, sweet and savory, making for an unforgettable first bite.
- **Caramelized Onion & Olive Tapenade Tart & Microgreens Salad (inspired by her mother):** A heartfelt homage to her mother’s culinary heritage, this tart was a savory dream. The deeply caramelized onions provided a rich, sweet foundation, complemented by the briny depth of olive tapenade, all encased in a delicate, flaky pastry. The accompanying microgreens salad offered a fresh, peppery contrast, elevating the entire dish.
- **Fig Leaf Roasted Salmon with Fig-Fennel Relish Herb Filled Forbidden Rice (pictured above):** This main course was truly innovative. Roasting the salmon wrapped in fig leaves imparted a subtle, earthy aroma and kept the fish incredibly moist and tender. The fig-fennel relish was a revelation, combining sweet figs with the aromatic crunch of fennel, creating a complex and intriguing flavor profile. Paired with herb-filled forbidden rice, known for its nutty flavor and striking black color, this dish was a harmonious blend of textures and tastes.
- **For dessert – Citrus Pots de Creme with Marmalade Shortbread and Eton Mess (loved this!):** The grand finale was a duo of delightful treats. The Citrus Pots de Creme offered a silky, smooth custard with a bright, zesty citrus kick, perfectly contrasted by the buttery crumble of marmalade shortbread. The Eton Mess, a classic British dessert, was an absolute joy – a delightful medley of crushed meringue, whipped cream, and fresh berries, providing a light, sweet, and wonderfully textural conclusion to the meal.

Pascale herself was as charming as her cuisine. Though sweet and initially reserved, her passion for food ignited as she eloquently described each menu item and shared captivating anecdotes. One particularly heartwarming story recounted her friendship with the iconic Julia Child, which serendipitously began when Pascale delivered a thoughtful gift of homemade preserves to Julia Child during a visit to town. This simple, kind gesture blossomed into a genuine and enduring friendship, built on a shared love for cooking and the joy of creating delicious food. Pictured above with her mother, who graciously assisted during our lunch, Pascale truly embodies the warmth and generosity that permeates her culinary creations. Many of us, myself included, couldn’t resist taking home a signed copy of her exquisite cookbook, “Salade.” Its beautiful recipes and focus on fresh ingredients make it a treasured addition to any kitchen, and I envision it as the first of a growing collection of Pascale Beale cookbooks on my bookshelf.

Capturing the Memories: Travel Photography Essentials
For any traveler, capturing the beauty and essence of a destination is paramount. To ensure I preserve these precious memories in vivid detail, I recently invested in a new camera designed specifically for travel: the Samsung NX500 28 MP Wireless Smart Mirrorless Digital Camera. Its compact size, combined with its powerful features and impressive image quality, makes it the ideal companion for exploring new places. You can witness the stunning results of this camera in my initial Princess Cruise post, as well as in many of the images featured here (though a couple of today’s photos were also beautifully captured with my iPhone). It strikes the perfect balance, offering the capabilities of a “big” camera in a form factor small enough to comfortably carry on all your adventures, ensuring every breathtaking vista and delicious meal is immortalized with clarity and color. A good travel camera, like a well-chosen excursion, truly enhances the entire journey, allowing you to relive those moments long after you’ve returned home.
