What I Devoured in February

February Reading: Books My Kids & I Are Reading This Month

February’s Literary Journey: A Family’s Guide to Engaging Reads

As the shortest month of the year draws to a close, it’s astonishing how quickly February has flown by. This month presented a unique set of challenges to my reading habits, with our days filled to the brim with vibrant birthday celebrations, essential home improvement projects, dedicated study sessions, and countless other commitments that pulled me away from the comforting embrace of my books. My cherished reading time typically unfolds right before I drift off to sleep. However, an unusual level of fatigue lately has meant that my usual 15-30 minutes of immersive bedside reading has often dwindled to a mere two minutes before slumber claims me.

Despite the hurdles, I did manage to complete a truly captivating book just this morning, a testament to the magnetic pull of a good story, even amidst a busy schedule. This month’s selections, both for myself and for my children, have offered a delightful blend of suspense, heartwarming classics, and exciting adventures, proving that even a few moments dedicated to reading can enrich our lives profoundly.

My Latest Literary Escapades: Dive into My February Reads

This past month, I found myself drawn to narratives that promised escape and intrigue. Here’s a closer look at the book that kept me on the edge of my seat and another I’m just beginning to explore.

Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline

Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline

This psychological thriller, Every Fifteen Minutes by the incredibly talented Lisa Scottoline, genuinely put my nerves to the test! It’s the kind of book that grips you from the very first page and doesn’t let go until the final, unexpected twist. The story centers around Dr. Eric Parrish, a highly successful and respected psychiatrist whose seemingly perfect home life begins to crumble. Simultaneously, he takes on a new, deeply troubled young patient, and almost immediately, his professional world is thrown into chaos by a series of interconnected and baffling circumstances. What unfolds is a complete train wreck, a spiraling descent into suspicion and betrayal that makes it impossible to put the book down. You’re constantly turning pages, desperate to unravel the truth and understand how on earth everything could have gone so wrong. Scottoline expertly weaves a web of suspense, making you question every character’s motives and every perceived truth. The pacing is relentless, and the character development is superb, allowing readers to truly feel the protagonist’s mounting anxiety and desperation. I highly recommend this read for anyone who enjoys a thrilling mystery with deep psychological undertones. I’m already eager to discover another one of her captivating novels!

Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf

Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf

I recently embarked on Little Mercies by Heather Gudenkauf, and so far, I am thoroughly captivated. I’m enjoying this one through Audible, which has been a fantastic way to fit more reading into my busy days, especially during commutes or while tackling household chores. The premise, as described by Amazon, immediately drew me in:

Veteran social worker Ellen Moore has seen the worst side of humanity—the vilest acts one person can commit against another. She is a fiercely dedicated children’s advocate and a devoted mother and wife. But one blistering summer day, a simple moment of distraction will have repercussions that Ellen could never have imagined, threatening to shatter everything she holds dear, and trapping her between the gears of the system she works for.

The novel delves into the emotionally charged world of a social worker, exploring the incredible pressures and heartbreaking decisions faced by those dedicated to protecting vulnerable children. Gudenkauf’s ability to craft a compelling narrative around such a sensitive topic is truly commendable. The idea of a single moment altering an entire life is profoundly unsettling and makes for a powerful story. I anticipate this book will be an emotional rollercoaster, touching upon themes of responsibility, systemic flaws, and the resilience of the human spirit. It’s a reminder of the ‘little mercies’ we all seek and offer in the face of immense challenges.

Anticipating New Worlds: Books on My Nightstand

My nightstand currently holds a promising stack of literary adventures, eagerly awaiting their turn. Among them are Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica and At The Water’s Edge by Sara Gruen, the acclaimed author of Water For Elephants. Kubica’s Pretty Baby is another suspenseful thriller that promises to keep me guessing, exploring the complex dynamics of a seemingly good deed gone terribly wrong. Gruen’s At The Water’s Edge, on the other hand, transports readers to the Scottish Highlands during World War II, weaving a tale of mystery, resilience, and the search for an elusive creature. Have any of you delved into either of these titles? I’m always curious to hear others’ thoughts and recommendations! Furthermore, my son has been passionately advocating for me to read either the fourth Harry Potter installment or The Hobbit, a book he recently finished and loved. The fact that he wants to share his reading experiences with me fills me with immense joy. It’s a tough decision to make today, but one I’ll happily ponder. So many wonderful books, so little time! It’s a delightful dilemma for any book lover.

Nurturing Young Minds: My Children’s Current Reads

To help inspire your family’s next literary adventure, I’m delighted to share what my kids have been enjoying this month. Fostering a love for reading from a young age is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children, opening doors to imagination, empathy, and knowledge.

My Son’s Adventures in Reading

My 11-year-old son recently devoured the Young Reader’s version of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This adapted version introduces younger readers to the magical world of Middle-earth, sparking imagination and a love for epic fantasy. It’s been wonderful to see him immersed in Bilbo Baggins’ journey, understanding the themes of courage, friendship, and discovery. After his journey through fantasy, he’s currently engrossed in Skink by Carl Hiaasen. He absolutely adores Hiaasen’s unique blend of humor, quirky characters, and environmental themes. Hiaasen’s books are fantastic for engaging middle-grade readers with their fast-paced plots and often hilarious situations, proving that reading can be both fun and thought-provoking. These choices highlight his diverse interests, moving from classic fantasy to contemporary adventure, a balance I always encourage.

My Daughter’s Literary Delights

My daughter, who recently celebrated her 9th birthday, has been thoroughly enjoying the Junior Classic version of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. We discovered this beautifully adapted version, along with several other Junior Classics, at Michaels for an incredible dollar each – a true treasure! This adaptation makes the timeless story of the March sisters accessible to younger readers, introducing them to themes of family, ambition, sisterhood, and resilience. It’s wonderful to see her connect with Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, experiencing a classic that has charmed generations. She’s also diving into Blubber by Judy Blume. This book brings back so many memories for me, as Judy Blume was a staple of my own childhood reading! Blume has an unparalleled ability to tackle challenging yet relatable topics for young readers, and Blubber addresses themes of bullying, self-esteem, and social dynamics in a way that resonates deeply. It’s a powerful read that can spark important conversations about kindness and acceptance. These books reflect her growing interest in both cherished classics and insightful contemporary stories that mirror the real world.
