The Allure of the Fridge Tour: Why We Love to Snoop

Welcome, dear readers, to my culinary sanctuary – my refrigerator! A huge thank you to Aggie for hosting this incredibly fun and insightful series. There’s a little bit of a snoop in all of us, isn’t there? Especially for us “foodies,” a glimpse into another kitchen’s cold storage is like discovering a treasure trove of inspiration, meal planning secrets, and daily cooking essentials. It’s akin to fashion enthusiasts eagerly perusing celebrity closets, seeking out trends and staple pieces. While I might not be a fashionista myself (and honestly, peeking into closets just makes me feel my own is lacking!), I am absolutely obsessed with fridge perusing. And judging by your presence here, you are too! So, let’s embark on this delicious journey together.

10 Kitchen Essentials: What’s Always Stocked in Sheila’s Fridge

Here’s a look at the top 10 things that consistently fill my family’s refrigerator, ensuring we’re always ready for anything from quick snacks to elaborate family meals.

1. Golden Goodness: The Indispensable Butter

In our household, butter isn’t just an ingredient; it’s a way of life. A day without butter feels almost incomplete, like a pool without water – perhaps a touch dramatic, but it underscores our deep appreciation for this golden staple! As an avid baker, butter is absolutely essential. While I do confess that, in my humble opinion, the best pie crust is often achieved with shortening, butter’s rich flavor and texture are irreplaceable in countless recipes. Our kitchen frequently hums with the aroma of freshly baked cookies, delightful muffins, or a comforting quick bread. With three hungry teens and a bustling tween, baked goods vanish quickly! Anything not devoured immediately finds its way into lunchboxes or is frozen, ready to rescue a non-baking day with a homemade treat.

2. A World of Flavor: Sheila’s Spice Sanctuary

Somewhere along the way, I read that red spices maintain their vibrancy and freshness longer when refrigerated. While I can’t pinpoint the source or confirm its scientific validity, I’ve adopted this practice wholeheartedly. Consequently, my fridge is home to an array of intensely flavored spices: various paprikas, curries, cumin, coriander, chili powders, turmeric, and saffron. Yes, I said “paprikas,” plural! Smoked paprika, with its deep, smoky notes, is fantastic in stews, soups, rubs, and marinades. Sweet Hungarian paprika is a must for classic chicken paprikash, goulash, and many other Central European dishes. My love for curry is equally strong, leading to a collection of different blends. Garam Masala is a family favorite, adding aromatic depth to marinades, sauces, and hearty stews. And for our cherished Mexican food nights, chili powders, cumin, and coriander are indispensable. I truly can’t imagine cooking without these colorful, potent spices. Oh, and did I mention red pepper flakes? We absolutely adore spicy food here! What’s your go-to spice or herb?

3. The Sauce Spectrum: Condiments and Flavor Boosters

Our fridge door is a testament to our love for bold flavors and diverse cuisines, brimming with an essential collection of condiments and sauces. Worcestershire sauce is a secret weapon, perfect for elevating marinades and salad dressings with its umami depth. Soy sauce, hoisin, red curry paste, and mole sauce are fundamental to our Asian and Mexican culinary adventures. And for those classic American flavors, Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce is a perennial favorite. Of course, good old-fashioned ketchup and mustard are always present. While I enjoy whipping up homemade salad dressings and vinaigrettes, my children, ever practical for their school lunches, prefer the convenience of store-bought Ranch and Italian dressings. We also have a slight salsa addiction; just saying! I can spot at least three different varieties right now—can you find more? And for dessert, Sanders hot fudge and caramel sauces are, in my humble opinion, simply the best on the planet.

{Pssst… yes, that is indeed duct tape holding a portion of our fridge’s bottom left storage unit together. A subtle hint that a new refrigerator is definitely on my wish list for many reasons! Why don’t appliances seem to last forever anymore?}

4. Fueling the Family: The Mighty Milk Supply

Milk is a cornerstone of daily life for the Johnsons. Our family consumes a minimum of six gallons a week – white milk, chocolate milk, warm milk for bedtime, cold milk with breakfast, milk blended into smoothies, poured over cereal and granola, and even for crafting creamy ice cream shakes and malteds. To keep up with this incredible demand and avoid daily trips to the grocery store, we maintain an extra fridge in the basement, always stocked with an additional 2-4 gallons. This ensures we never run out of this vital, versatile beverage that fuels our energetic household.

5. Sweet Spreads & Culinary Secrets: Jams and Jellies

Jams and jellies are another delightful obsession in our home. Strawberry reigns supreme as our undisputed favorite, closely followed by classic grape and luscious peach. But our collection doesn’t stop there; you’ll also find cherry, comforting apple butter, tart blackberry, and sweet raspberry. In my opinion, one can truly never have too many jams on hand. Beyond the breakfast toast staple, I frequently incorporate jams and jellies into creative marinades, vibrant salad dressings, and various baking projects, adding unexpected layers of flavor and sweetness. Without a doubt, peanut butter and a good fruit jam are the ultimate BFFs in our household, a timeless combination enjoyed by everyone.

6. Freshness First: Fruits and Vegetables Year-Round

Living in Michigan presents its challenges when it comes to accessing local, fresh produce throughout the year. As a result, a significant portion of our vegetable intake comes from carefully selected canned or frozen options. However, I always prioritize keeping fresh greens on hand, particularly Earthbound Farm’s spinach and mixed greens, which are perfect for nutrient-packed smoothies and crisp salads. A variety of other snacking veggies are also consistently stocked for quick, healthy bites. During the glorious summer months, our crisper drawers would be overflowing with an abundance of vibrant, local produce from nearby farmers’ markets. Year-round, you’ll reliably find crisp apples, sweet mandarin oranges, juicy grapes, and bright lemons. I’m also particularly fond of using mangos in salads, smoothies, and even savory curries, so if I find beautiful, ripe ones, they always make it into my cart!

7. The Lifesavers: Smart Strategies for Leftovers

In our bustling fridge, you’ll often spy containers of leftover spaghetti noodles, rich marinara sauce, and fluffy white rice. These staples are always on hand, ready to be transformed into a quick and satisfying stir-fry on busy weeknights. My kids are also huge fans of a hearty, carb-filled plate of Pasta Carbonara. While we’re not always the best at consistently eating up all our leftovers, they truly become lifesavers when the week gets hectic, or when my husband Ken works a late shift. Having something delicious and easy to reheat means a nourishing meal is just minutes away, reducing stress and ensuring everyone is well-fed.

8. Dip Into Deliciousness: Healthy Snacks on Hand

Dips are a constant feature in our fridge, always front and center, ready for healthy snacking. Hummus, homemade guacamole, and a versatile dip for fresh vegetables are absolute essentials. I often arrange a platter of fresh, crisp veggies alongside pretzel crisps or pita bread and one of these delicious dips. This way, when the kids burst through the door after school, they have an inviting and wholesome snack readily available, helping them refuel and make smart food choices before dinner.

9. The Versatile Staple: Eggs for Every Occasion

Eggs are a beloved and highly valued item in our household. They are incredibly versatile, deliciously tasty, and packed with wholesome nutrition, making them the perfect food for our active family life. All of my children have mastered the art of making themselves eggs and toast, a skill that proves invaluable. With a schedule packed with sports, music lessons, and various academic pursuits, it’s incredibly helpful that they can independently prepare a meal when hunger strikes, especially since this mom can’t always be there the moment they need to eat. Did I mention my in-laws raise chickens? And that my lovely sister-in-law graciously delivers farm-fresh eggs right to my door? Yes, I am absolutely spoiled rotten, and for that, I am eternally grateful!

10. Dairy Delights: A Curated Collection

As you might have noticed, our fridge boasts an impressive, almost “insane,” array of dairy products. We consistently stock three or four different types of yogurt because everyone in the family has their favorite, not to mention our love for creamy yogurt smoothies. Sour cream is absolutely essential for countless dishes, from dolloping on chili to enriching sauces. Buttermilk is a baking staple, indispensable for fluffy pancakes, tender muffins, delicious breads, and flaky biscuits. Whole milk serves multiple purposes, from baking to creating rich, velvety sauces. Half-and-half is reserved for Ken’s morning coffee and Cece’s afternoon tea. And tucked away in the back, you’ll always find coffee creamer, ready for unexpected guests. Then there’s CHEESE – glorious cheese! At this very moment, we have at least ten different varieties, which is actually a low count for us. I typically love to keep my personal favorites, goat cheese and blue cheese, on hand for enhancing salads and appetizers. Clearly, we are a family who wholeheartedly loves cheese!

Beyond the Inventory: Real Life in a Family Kitchen

Did you spot anything in my fridge that I might have missed? Do our fridges share similar staples and quirks? I always strive to keep things real, and as you can plainly see, our fridge usually has a comfortable, lived-in messiness to it. I confess, I tidied it up a bit for your visit, tried to create some semblance of order and neat rows. Despite my best efforts to clean up my act for my visitors, it still maintains its charmingly wonky and messy character! Oh well, that’s just real life with a busy family. Ultimately, I am incredibly thankful and blessed that my fridge runneth over with sustenance and delicious possibilities.

Aggie, thank you once again for inviting me into your wonderful space and allowing me to share a piece of our kitchen life. I can’t wait to discover whose fridge tour is next! XO Sheila
