A Gastronomic and Historic Adventure: My Unforgettable Washington D.C. Weekend Getaway
This past weekend, I had the incredible fortune to embark on an exciting journey, tagging along with my husband on a business trip to the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. It had been years, perhaps even since my middle school days, since I last set foot in this iconic city. The anticipation was palpable – I was beyond thrilled at the prospect of revisiting the grand monuments, exploring world-class museums, and, of course, delving into the vibrant local culinary scene that D.C. is so renowned for. Through careful research and invaluable recommendations from locals, we uncovered some truly remarkable dining establishments. Our culinary explorations proved to be an absolute triumph, yielding not a single disappointing meal throughout our entire stay.
Day One: A Grand Welcome to the Capital and a Taste of Maryland
Our adventure commenced early on a bustling Friday morning. Upon our arrival, after quickly checking into our hotel and depositing our luggage, we wasted no time. We immediately set out, eager to immerse ourselves in the heart of D.C. Our first destination was just a few blocks away: the majestic White House. As I approached this globally recognized symbol of democracy and power, I literally had to pause and catch my breath. It’s an entirely different experience to witness it in person, standing so close, compared to seeing it on television or in photographs. The sheer scale and historical weight of the building left me momentarily speechless, a truly profound and unforgettable moment.
Crab Feast at Dancing Crab: A Maryland Tradition in D.C.
Our first lunch in D.C. was destined to be a memorable one, deeply rooted in my husband’s Maryland heritage. Born and raised in the Old Line State, he harbors a profound affection for steamed blue crabs. After a bit of online searching and hearing glowing recommendations, we discovered Dancing Crab. This beloved seafood spot, nestled in the charming Tenleytown neighborhood, conveniently located near American University, promised an authentic crab-eating experience. We couldn’t wait to check it out.
We arrived right as they opened, securing a cozy booth as the very first customers of the day. The anticipation was almost as delightful as the meal itself. Without hesitation, we placed our order: a generous half-dozen jumbo steamed blue crabs, accompanied by a refreshing pitcher of cold beer. It was the perfect pairing, setting the stage for a quintessential East Coast dining experience.
The crabs themselves were superb – plump, succulent, and perfectly seasoned with classic Old Bay spice. While we secretly wished they were just a touch larger, their flavor and freshness were undeniable. This authentic crab feast proved to be the ideal and most delicious way to kick off our whirlwind weekend tour of Washington D.C., immersing us in the local flavors and setting a high bar for the meals to come.
A Culinary Journey Through Washington D.C.: From Pizza to Ceviche
Beyond the majestic monuments and historic landmarks, our D.C. weekend was truly defined by its exceptional culinary explorations. Each meal was an adventure, a delightful discovery of flavors and dining experiences that truly highlighted the city’s diverse and sophisticated food scene. Here’s a closer look at some of the unforgettable stops along our gastronomic way:
Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza: A Taste of Naples in D.C.
One evening, we sought out the comforting yet exquisite flavors of authentic Italian pizza, leading us to Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza. From the moment we stepped in, the aroma of a traditional wood-fired oven filled the air, promising an experience true to its Neapolitan roots. This wasn’t just any pizza place; it was a sanctuary for fresh ingredients and traditional techniques.
(Our first order was the house sangria, which was simply divine. So good, in fact, we confidently ordered a carafe – why not indulge in the best?)
(We started with an appetizer that quickly stole our hearts: crispy, golden-brown mozzarella-filled risotto balls. Each bite offered a perfect blend of creamy risotto, gooey mozzarella, and a crunchy exterior – an absolute delight.)
(And then, the main event: the Pizza Napoletana. It was a masterpiece of simplicity and flavor, adorned with briny capers, savory anchovies, ripe tomatoes, fragrant basil, and rich, fresh mozzarella. The crust, blistered and chewy from the wood fire, was perfection. This dish transported us straight to the streets of Naples.)
Gordon Biersch: Craft Brews and Savory Tapas
For a change of pace and a taste of local craft brewing, we made our way to Gordon Biersch. This popular brewpub chain is known for its German-style beers and American cuisine, offering a lively atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. Their commitment to brewing excellence was evident in every sip.
(My husband, a true beer enthusiast, chose the sampler, allowing him to explore a variety of their expertly crafted brews, from lagers to IPAs, each distinct and flavorful.)
(To accompany our beers, we shared a selection of tapas. Each dish, from savory sliders to crispy calamari, was expertly prepared and burst with flavor. The service at Gordon Biersch was as outstanding as the food and drinks, making for a truly enjoyable dining experience.)
Oyamel Cocina Mexicana: A Fiesta for the Senses
Our culinary journey then took an exciting turn towards modern Mexican cuisine at Oyamel, a vibrant establishment by renowned Chef José Andrés. This restaurant is celebrated for its authentic and innovative approach to Mexican food, and it certainly lived up to its reputation as a D.C. culinary gem. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the promise of bold flavors hung in the air.
(The experience began with a flourish: tableside guacamole preparation. It was an art form in itself, watching fresh avocados, serrano chiles, lime, salt, and cilantro being expertly muddled and combined right before our eyes. The aroma was intoxicating.)
(The result was nothing short of heavenly. The guacamole, finished with a crumble of fresh queso fresco, was vibrant, creamy, and spicy in all the right ways – truly the best I’ve ever tasted. It set a high bar for the rest of the meal.)
(Next, I ventured into new territory with my very first taste of ceviche. I chose the red snapper ceviche, beautifully prepared with creamy avocado in a zesty salsa mexicana of fresh tomato, sweet onion, cilantro, and bright lime juice. It was a revelation! The fresh, tangy, and delicate flavors immediately captivated me; I was utterly in love.)
Old Ebbitt Grill: A Historic D.C. Brunch Experience
No D.C. trip would be complete without experiencing a classic brunch, and for that, we chose the iconic Old Ebbitt Grill. As one of Washington’s oldest and most famous dining establishments, dating back to 1856, stepping inside feels like walking through history. The opulent interior, bustling atmosphere, and reputation for exquisite American fare made it an irresistible choice for our Sunday morning.
(I indulged in their renowned Eggs Chesapeake, a delightful twist on Eggs Benedict. This dish featured perfectly poached eggs atop a generous, savory jumbo lump crab cake, all served on a toasted English muffin and smothered in a rich, creamy Chesapeake sauce. It was a luxurious and thoroughly satisfying brunch, epitomizing D.C. elegance.)
Yogen Fruz: A Sweet Retreat
Amidst our historical tours and indulgent meals, we found a delightful, refreshing treat at Yogen Fruz. This frozen yogurt spot became a welcome daily ritual, offering a light and customizable dessert option.
(Conveniently located right next door to our hotel, it quickly transformed into my afternoon obsession. The fresh fruit mixed into creamy frozen yogurt was the perfect guilt-free indulgence to combat the D.C. heat and provide a sweet energy boost.)
Tony Cheng’s: An Authentic Chinese Culinary Gem
For our final dinner, we craved something truly exceptional and discovered Tony Cheng’s. Located in the heart of D.C.’s Chinatown, this restaurant is a local legend, renowned for its authentic and diverse Chinese menu. While we did have to wait for what felt like an eternity to secure a table, the bustling atmosphere and tantalizing aromas assured us it would be worth every moment.
(We are thrilled to report that the wait was absolutely justified. The dishes that arrived at our table were a symphony of flavors and textures, undoubtedly the best Chinese food we’ve savored in a very long time. Each dish, from classic dim sum to savory stir-fries, was prepared with incredible depth and authenticity.)
(My fortune cookie perfectly encapsulated our experience: a delightful end to a truly fantastic meal.)
